As you probably already know, Lindy hop legend Frankie Manning will be turning 95 years old this May. And from May 21st-May 25th, 2009 (Memorial Day Weekend) New York City, the birthplace of Lindy Hop and the Savoy Ballroom, will play host to Frankie’s 95th Birthday Festival, a spectacular birthday celebration for Frankie.
The Festival’s organizers have designated a special “Frankie Week” from March 12-22, 2009. This week is intended to allow Frankie fans from all over the world (whether or not you are attending the actual Festival) to celebrate Frankie’s 95th birthday by honoring him in a number of special ways.
One of these ways is to participate in a Global Shim Sham. During Frankie Week, Lindy Hop communities from all around the world will video themselves dancing the Shim Sham. The plan is to have everyone upload their videos to YouTube for everyone to enjoy. A compilation video with selected entries will also be created to show at the Frankie 95 Festival this May!
The San Francisco Lindy Hop community is videotaping for this Global Shim Sham this Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 12:00 PM Noon, outside near the Golden Gate Bridge (with the Bridge in the background). We would like to get as many Lindy hoppers as possible, so I hope you can all make it. Please find all the details below.
Hope to see you Saturday,
Ken Watanabe
